Why use Threema
I have always been a loyal supporter of E2EE (end-to-end encryption), with so many software options available, why do I choose to use Threema?
The reasons are simple:
- Smaller user base
- Independent company development
- Company data servers located in Switzerland
- Direct connection available in China
In fact, I have been following Threema since 2019. However, I stopped using it because it was too difficult to use.
It wasn't until 2023, after using it for a week, that I could still identify many areas of dissatisfaction.
- No self-destructing messages or message recall feature
I have asked the official team about this issue before, but their explanation was that there are many ways for someone to obtain messages, so self-destruction is ineffective (roughly translated).
However, it is obvious that communication time should also be strictly limited, as the longer the exposure time, the lower the encryption reliability.
But I have noticed that the official team is reconsidering this feature this year...
- No multi-device synchronization
This is a frustrating issue. In this era of smart technology, even the neighboring E2EE software cannot achieve multi-device synchronization, except for Threema.
They announced the plan to launch this feature at the end of 2022 on their blog, but until today, they have only released the preview testing for multi-device synchronization on iOS. This development progress makes me quite skeptical.
Why not take a look at Matrix? They release a new version every week and have already rewritten the architecture in Rust.
